Fremantle Donor Centre needs your blood this Easter

Leah RobertsFremantle Gazette

SOUTH Fremantle resident Tim McGrath donated blood for the first time last week and said it was a positive experience.

Mr McGrath said he was inspired to donate by his son-in-law, and coming across the Fremantle Donor Centre by chance.

“My son-in-law who works at Fiona Stanley has told me to donate before,” he said.

“Last week I was walking and I saw the centre and I just walked in and made my appointment.

“It was a really pleasant experience and they have a great cafeteria with plenty of cookies and fruit juice.”

For those who are unsure about donating, Mr McGrath said it is a great way to spend an hour.

“You can do it before or after you go shopping – it’s really easy,” he said.

“I was really impressed about how smart the set-up is, it looks like a business class lounge at an airport, not very clinical.

“It has a great ambience, I have my next appointment to donate blood in June.”

Australian Red Cross Blood Service spokeswoman Jessica Willet said an extra 160 people are needed to donate blood in Fremantle over Easter.

“In particular, more donors are needed at Fremantle Blood Donor Centre on Easter Monday, as currently just four donors are booked in to donate,” she said.

“One in three people will need blood in their lifetime, yet currently only one in 30 donates.

“Donating blood has never been easier; donors can now manage their appointments online, track their donation history and even view their health statistics.”
