POLICE are investigating 15 accounts of stealing from cars at Fremantle Cemetery among the 70 reported thefts from metropolitan cemeteries over the last four months.

Offenders have targeted vehicles parked both inside the cemeteries and at nearby carparks.

A recent offence on May 7 saw a 71-year-old woman’s car stolen from Karrakatta Cemetery while she was just five metres away.

The car was driven to Guildford Cemetery where more items were stolen from another car.

CCTV footage captured a man using the woman’s bankcard at a Fremantle sports store about 9.30am.

CCTV footage was also captured at a South Fremantle liquor store.

Local Policing Teams have increased patrols in local cemeteries, but Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Cox said locals needed to be more cautious.

“WA Police would also like to remind the public of the need to be vigilant when leaving their vehicles unattended and ensure the vehicles are secure and all valuables have been removed,” he said.
