BEFORE John Butler was famous, he was the opening act for Fremantle band Prawns With Horns, who will be performing at Hidden Treasures on Thursday July 26.
Lead singer Kalgan Rivers said the band has lived around Fremantle for years.
“John and I are still good friends, back in the day he used to borrow my guitar when he was busking in Freo,” he said.
The Freo local said the name of the band started with a rhyme and it just stuck.
“The guys in the band where on the way to record a cassette, and at the time there was a band called, The Fish that John West Rejected and someone said what about prawns, then someone else said with horns,” he said.
“They wrote it down on the a piece of paper and it just stuck, we only added horn instruments to our band later on.”
The singer said defining the type of music Prawns with Horns plays is hard to answer.
“It’s certainly not dinner music, depending on who you are, but the most apt description is acid cabaret,” he said.
“It’s colourful music, always very high energy.”
Kalgan said it was great to see young bands perform at Hidden Treasures.
“I’ve always said, to achieve your wildest dreams, first you must start with some wild dreams,” he said.
