The friends will splutter across the country in their 1989 Subaru L-Series Sportswagon, hoping to reach their $10,000 target along the way.

‘You get to visit all these isolated and remote places and the camaraderie among all the drivers is really great.’
Despite preparing the car as best they can, Peter joked that breaking down was always a concern. ‘Getting to the end of the day is definitely the goal at the start of every day,’ he said.
‘The car has given us a few moments, but it has tended to drive smoothly.
‘But if anything does go wrong, you’ve got some old-style mechanics who can fix absolutely anything.’
