Funding incentive to push councils towards using recycled materials

LOCAL councils are being pushed to use recycled materials when building roads, carparks and drains, with the State Government dangling a juicy carrot to ensure it happens.

The incentive is $10 million worth of Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Account funds that will be put into two pools over three years.

The first will provide a pre-allocated, non-competitive financial incentive payment for each Perth council which uses recycled construction and demolition products.

The second stream will involve competitive funding for the purchase and use of recycled construction products by the private sector, Perth councils and State Government entities. Environment Minister Albert Jacob said it was important more effort was made to recycle construction and demolition materials, considering the amount of waste that ends up in landfill each year.
