EMERGENCY services have set up in Cockburn Central to cap a gas leak reported this afternoon.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said an ammonia leak was detected at a commercial premise on Pusey Road.

The gas is within safe levels, according to DFES.

People in the area bounded by Beeliar Drive, the Kwinana Freeway, Berrigan Drive and Hammond Road may be impacted by fumes.

A DFES spokeswoman said appliances from a number of Perth-based fire departments, including Success and Murdoch, were on site – together with a scientific officer and district officer, to isolate the leak.

Motorists have been asked to avoid the area, with some road closures in place.
