Get your skates on as Winterworld Fremantle makes its return

MAKING Fremantle a year-round destination is the goal for the Mayor of Fremantle Brad Pettitt .

To tempt tourists and families alike to the harbour town, Winterworld Fremantle is on again – offering ice skating, log fires, mulled wine and a snow pit.

Dr Pettitt said it was really important to have winter activities on in Freo.

“Fremantle is a great summer destination, but I think making it a destination for families in winter is key,” he said.

“Winterworld has the largest ice rink in Australia as I understand it, it’s good to have it back as it is a popular event.”

Last year 60,000 people attended the event and this year they are hoping for more.

Dr Pettitt said there are plenty of things that make Freo a great winter destination already.

“The hidden treasures is on, winter music festival, you have Winterworld, our plan is to build on it for the future,” he said.

“Next year the Fremantle festival is also moving to winter.”

Dr Pettitt said he would be ice skating at the festival.

“One of my earliest memories of Freo as a kid was ice skating where ‘Metros’ was, Metropolis used to be an ice-skating rink,” he said.

“I will definitely have a go but you wont see any talented manoeuvres.”

The event will also feature snow sisters musical mornings, free kids activities and freedom fairies.
