FHHS thanked around 150 volunteers from a range of groups including volunteer drivers, Red Cross, clown doctors, Radio Lollipop and the Mental Health Consumer Advisory Group with a morning of educational and development sessions and a morning tea.

Red Cross volunteer Betty Smith-Gander, one of 40 Red Cross volunteers to spend time at the hospital, said she had been volunteering with the organisation for 45 years and the hospital for the past 16.

‘I volunteer because I love the interaction with people and I feel like I’m making a difference,’ she said.

‘Often just a friendly smile and someone to talk to can make being in hospital a little bit easier.’
