Angela Lewis, second officer with the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation and Challenger Institute of Technology student, is a finalist in the WA Vocational Student of the Year category.
Ms Lewis fell in love with the maritime industry after volunteering on the Leeuwin II as a teenager.
After leaving high school she gained a Certificate IV in Maritime Operations at Challenger, and completed the 1000 days at sea needed before she could study a deck watchkeeper course.
The qualification will allow her to sail as a navigational watchkeeper on any vessel anywhere in the world, and take her a step closer to becoming a captain.
It wasnt expecting it at all it came as a real shock, she said of her nomination. Its a great opportunity to put the word out about the industry and sailing.
Winners, who will share in $80,000 in cash and prizes, will be announced on September 4.
Ms Lewis said the money would be put towards her ongoing studies.
