SOUTH Fremantle’s favourite community food-based competition is sure to get stomachs rumbling and mouths watering when it returns on Saturday.
The Lilly St Lasagna Bake Off, which is entering its 18th year, continues to grow in both size and popularity as residents of Lilly Street and those from around Fremantle are invited to bake their best dish and enter it into one of three categories.
One of the organisers of the event, Jennifer Baker said the event had grown from nine people entering the inaugural competition in 1998 to 52 entries and more than 600 visitors enjoying last year’s offering.
“The belief behind the Lilly Street Lasagna Bake Off is to unite people in a fun-filled competition to see who can make the best lasagna in Lilly Street,” she said.
“Everyone looks forward to Lasagna Day and there is a build- up to it for weeks beforehand.
“On Bake Off morning, kids and dogs run up and down the street, claiming it as their own, large speakers blare Dean Martin’s all-time favourite hits and neighbours are out on the street erecting tents together, laughing and joking about who has made the best lasagna this year.
“The day is really like a huge street picnic.”
The Lilly St Lasagna Bake Off is on November 21
