A VIETNAMESE man accused of having cannabis plants worth more than $500,000 has appeared in court.

Magistrate Peter Malone read the charges to Duc Thanh Ngyuen through a translator at Fremantle Magistrates Court.

Police allegedly found 217 plants worth $570,000 at his Spearwood address on August 27.

The 56-year-old appeared via video link at Hakea Prison to face charges of cultivating a prohibited plant with intent to sell or supply, and possessing a prohibited drug.

Mr Malone granted Mr Nguyen an adjournment until October 4 to seek legal aid.

He stated that given the seriousness of the cultivating charge, bail was not to be considered.
