Maya introduces new art to public

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

Maya Indian Restaurant has kicked off the five-week Maya Introducing in their upstairs space, giving local artists and musicians a chance to spread their work to a wider audience, as well as providing some ambience for diners on a Friday night.

Among those to have taken the stage are musicians Blake Byrne and Wayne Glasson and artists Peta Garnaut and Therese Howie, with names like Catarina Ranieri, Constance L Conroy and Dead Capital set to feature in future.

Event co-ordinator Victoria Hainsworth said there were not many places giving opportunities to rising talent.

“With a prominent location, this was a nice idea to add a little buzz to Market Street,” she said. “I wanted each week to be totally different so we have everything from painters, illustrators, bands, soloists, cartoonists and drummers.

“The first weeks were really nice with a very relaxed and creative vibe; people loved the music and art and were curious about the line-up for the following weeks.”

The next event will be held on January 22 with drummer Elliot and painter Catarina Ranieri from 6.30pm.

Maya Introducing runs until February 5. Visit here for more information.
