Before the changes, the Local Government Act needed such disclosures only in annual returns.
Local Government Minister Tony Simpson said the changes to the Act would improve transparency and accountability.
“For the first time, elected members and senior staff will be required to disclose gifts and travel contributions within 10 days and for the information to be easily accessible on the council’s website,” he said.
“The West Australian community rightly has high expectations when it comes to the conduct of elected members.”
Changes will apply only to gifts and travel valued at more than $200.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the City had been actively working alongside the Department of Local Government to improve the transparency and accountability of the sector and welcomed the legislative changes.
