Lita Santos, who lives with worsening multiple sclerosis, was planning to go to Russia to undergo treatment, but recently received news there would be a three-month delay.
That has forced the mother of three to search for alternatives. She now believes Mexico is her best option, but to get there and to fund the 12-month recovery period, she’ll need up to $100,000.
With the help of friends, family and the community, more than $60,000 has been raised so far.
She believes a further $15,000, which she hopes to raise through a dinner show gala night at St Jerome’s Primary School on August 23, will at least pay for her treatment, with the remaining funds to be gathered over the proceeding months.
She said she was willing to take a chance on treatment overseas if it meant being able to watch her three girls ” aged two, five and 16 ” grow up.
‘My kids need me to be here,’ she said.
‘There’s only one thing I fear more than death and that’s dying a slow, undignified death and forcing my family to have to look after me.
‘That’s what I always go back to.’
The gala night will feature a choir, singers and a Santos family album release.
