A council spokeswoman said the City was disappointed the mural had to be removed, but the City was developing the Coogee Beach Master Plan which would identify more suitable artwork locations, including Aboriginal artwork to replace the mural.

The draft plan was expected to go before council later this year.

‘There were reports kids were ripping apart the cement and throwing it, so it was a liability for the City and had to be removed,’ she said.

‘It has been fixed a couple of times over the years but the type of stone that was used is rare so it never came back to the original condition.’
