Music of the mind

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

MUSIC has amazing healing powers, a concept not lost on Linda Gillan when she went through her own mental health issues.

“Music has been a very big part of my recovery and my onward journey,” Ms Gillan said.

“It has helped me incredibly. It still does, and I wanted to use that medium to share that music is a wonderful portrayer of messages and we can help people to understand.”

Noticing the heavy stigma associated with her own struggles, and seeing the effect it had on her family and friends, Ms Gillan decided it was time people started talking about mental health.

She will get the conversation started with the Mind Your Health Fundraiser Concert at Mojos Bar on Sunday, an initiative that has seen local musicians donate their time to perform everything from mellow tunes to toe-tapping jams, while some artists will have artworks up for sale.

Ms Gillan said money raised would be donated to the Meeting for Minds Foundation.

“By discovering together and singing together, it’s healthy for our mental health,” she said.

“People don’t gather together in the same way that they use to, so I thought let’s kick up our heels and encourage people to talk about mental health.

“By coming to the fundraiser you are showing that you care. You are showing that it is an important issue and that people want to support change.” Mind Your Health Fundraiser Concert When: March 13 from 4pm Where: Mojos Bar Entry: By donation More Information: search MIND your HEALTH FUNdraiser capitalisation ok on Facebook.
