The Department of Sport and Recreation is developing a program to connect communities and make it easier for neighbours to get to know each other.

The first Street Champions pilot program will run in Cockburn, Fremantle and Swan.

Fremantle’s Matt Elliott and Swan’s John Sansui are in too.

The trio will receive training before chatting to neighbours about projects they would like to see undertaken.

From there it will all be about moving forward with those ideas. Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said she was excited to see the pilot up and running.

“Coming from the country I know the value of community,” she said.

“I know that when people in a street get to know each other they are friendlier and that community is safer.”
