THE City of Fremantle has named a new chief executive.

The City’s former Director of Planning Philip St John, who left to join the City of Wanneroo in 2014, will return to Fremantle to take over the chief executive mantle from Graeme Mackenzie.

Mr Mackenzie last year announced he would retire after 12 years in the job.

Fremantle mayor Brad Pettitt said they had received more than 100 applications for the job, but were pleased to secure the services of Mr St John.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Phil to lead the City of Fremantle through the next exciting phase of the city’s rejuvenation,” he said.

“Council wanted to appoint a CEO who will continue to drive the bold vision for Fremantle’s revitalisation, including implementing council’s new strategic plan which will be released shortly and Phil was chosen because he’s known for his innovative thinking and his ability to get things done.

“I would like to thank Graeme for more than a decade of solid and trustworthy leadership.”

Mr St John is expected to return to Fremantle in May, working alongside Mr Mackenzie until the end of 2016 to “ensure a complete handover process and a seamless transition”.
