New pub proposed

Bryce LuffFremantle Gazette

THE team behind a new tavern proposed for Yangebup say the focus is on creating a family friendly environment, but not everyone is convinced.

The development, to be located on the north-eastern side of the Beeliar Road and Durnin Avenue roundabout, would include a restaurant, bars, alfresco areas, a bottle shop and 185 car bays.

The tavern is backed by the team behind the Quarie Bar and Brasserie in Hammond Park.

At a community briefing session last week, developer Daniel Correia said they were looking to replicate the success at a new site.

"What we're tyring to create here is not your traditional concept of a pub or tavern," he said.

"Yes it sells alcohol but that's a part of modern life.

"It's really an integration and hopefully " as with the Quarie it will become part of the community centre."

Concerns for the project have centred around crime, the possible promotion of alcohol, access across Beeliar Drive, noise and the number of vehicles entering and leaving the car park.

One local described the proposal as a "completely different ballgame" to the Quarie and questioned whether it would be family friendly.

"A place where people can drink and watch football doesn't say family friendly," he said.

The City of Cockburn is likely to consider the proposal in December.
