Transport Minister Troy Buswell, who announced that $16 million from the 2013-14 budget would be allocated to the project, told the Gazette construction of the station would begin in 2015.
He said the Public Transport Authority would tender for a company to design the station later this year.
The $80 million package ($57m for the station and parking, plus $23m for two more rail car sets to service the Perth to Mandurah line) will be located about 3km south of Gateway shopping centre and will play an important role in easing congestion around the Cockburn Central area.
