Nobody delivers the small goods like Jela

The Spearwood resident is known about town for her friendly nature and willingness to chat.

But it’s her role as a shop assistant at the Coogee Continental Deli that she’s most famous for.

Mrs Marenko, who celebrated her 70th birthday last Thursday, has worked at the local deli for 12 years, with owner Jamie Della telling the Gazette he is continually amazed by her work ethic and loyalty to her customers.

‘She’s absolutely incredible,’ he said. ‘She’s never late, she’s never had a sick day and she loves to chat to everyone.’

‘It’s great to have someone like that with us. She’s a community icon.’

Mrs Marenko, who said she has no plans to slow down, told the Gazette her secret was to keep moving and laughing.

‘I can’t wait to go to work,’ she said. ‘I chat to new people every day. They’re like an extended family. I will carry on as long as I can.’
