FROM Leighton Beach to Rottnest Island, Port to Pub swim registrations will be open on Monday October 15.

Now in its fourth year, the event is a 19.7 km open water swim event that attracts 1500 novice and competitive swimmers.

Former Olympian Eamon Sullivan said the event brings back a lot of memories from his competitive swimming days.

“When we were asked to be involved, for us there are a bunch of old swimmers that used to swim together and it was a good chance to dust off the Speedos,” he said.

“It’s a good day, especially when you get to the island, finishing at Rottnest is pretty iconic in Western Australia.”

Last year the event had to be stopped due to deteriorating weather conditions.

Two teams looking for redemption include Subiaco Sport Massage Steam team lead by former Olympian Eamon Sullivan and the South Cott Physio Dream Team lead by current Australian open water champion Nic Rollo.

Sullivan said last year was frustrating and the team tried to keep going.

“Last year was the first year we had really strong competition because in the first couple of years it was a pretty new event,” he said.

“We are not fit by any means, we are retired and probably 10 kilos heavier then we used to be racing.

“We are racing some younger guys who are most open water based, we probably weren’t expecting to win, were hoping to win, we are competitive.”

Looking forward to giving it another crack this year and to remaining undefeated, Sullivan said the training schedule looked little different.

“A lot of us are now new dads so time is pretty short,” he said.

“It all fun, about getting to the end, having a beer in Rottnest talking about how well you swam, who was worst on ground, who was best.

“We are really looking forward to this year.”

The Port to Pub is on March 16.
