These days the Hammond Road Cottage is used as a sales office for the growing Lakeside Success development.

The oldest land title available reveals the land had been owned by William Henry Barfield and his son.

It has changed hands a few times since then, with the Jandakot Caravan Park closing in 2013.

Matched against heritage criteria, the building was not considered anything special.

The only original internal features are the timber-lined ceiling and some wide floorboards which remain in some parts of the building.

Despite this, a City officer suggested it be added as Management Category C item.

“It is considered that the place has some heritage significance, specifically demonstrating some historic and rarity value given that it is one of the remaining pre-1950s farm dwellings in the locality,” the officer said in a report to councillors.

Lakeside Success developers intend to demolish the building for public open space and a drainage sump, as per an adopted structure plan.

A large oak tree will be retained.

If it is added to Cockburn’s LGI, council will call on the developer to prepare an archival record and install some sort of art representing the history of the site.

Lakeside Success project manager Alex Noble said they would work an interpretive piece into the landscaping that will take place.

Public consultation will take place for three weeks before a final call on its addition to the LGI is made.
