Peter Newman, Curtin University’s Sustainability professor, aimed to convince his audience of this at the World Environment Day Conference hosted by the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire last week.

If their reactions were anything to go by, he succeeded.

Professor Newman is also director of Curtin University’s Sustainability Policy Institute in Fremantle.

Professor Newman, keynote speaker at Restoring the Balance: The State of the Environment at Millbrook Winery, said many societies were experiencing rising temperatures and extreme weather events, and facing diminishing water resources and biodiversity.

‘Cities do collapse and ours will too, if we don’t change ‘
