Currambine resident Rie Moustakas, owner of the Gloria Jean’s Coffee outlet in Success, won a berth at the competition after success at the Australasian Specialty Coffee Association National Championships, also in Melbourne, a few weeks ago.

The upcoming ‘Olympics of coffee’ is set to be a tough four-day competition. Preliminary rounds will determine a top six who will then face-off in the final.

Baristas will be judged on a range of criteria testing their creativity, how the coffee looks visually and overall performance.

Ms Moustakas was in Sydney last week preparing for the competition, hoping to be ready come game time.

‘I felt overwhelmed after winning the national championships. I was happy,’ she said.

‘Then the reality of being under pressure set in when I realised I had the world competition to prepare for.

‘I have put everything in my life on hold for now so I can focus on training,’ she said.
