By Bryce Luff, Cockburn GazetteFremantle Gazette

Either way the result could not have been more perfect for Adam Maschette and Emily Critchell who, after five years together, were celebrating their engagement – just seconds after the birth of their healthy baby girl.

Adam said he had been planning the big proposal for about five months, but didn’t anticipate baby River was set to announce herself to the world three days early.

Queue some quick phone calls and some extra help from staff at the Armadale-Kelmscott Memorial Hospital who were able to buy Adam precious extra minutes for the ring to arrive.

‘I had to get my brother to rush down to the jeweller to pick up the ring and rush it over, so that was pretty stressful,’ he said.

‘But the staff were able to hold off the delivery just long enough for him to get there on time.’

Just moments after their second daughter was born, Adam was down on one knee. Seconds later and the Yangebup couple were engaged.

While the pair had previously talked about marriage, Emily said she was shocked by the proposal.

‘When he got down on one knee it was unbelievable,’ she said.

‘Everyone was in on it, it was so surreal. I just started crying.’

Midwife Hayley Potter said it was a wonderful moment to be involved in.

‘It was a privilege to be there to witness the birth of their baby and their engagement,’ she said.

‘It was a touching and beautiful moment and we congratulate them.’
