Perspectives of war

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

Year 10 Iona Presentation College students used the trip to learn more about Australia’s military history in the lead up to Anzac Day, hearing from Mr Allender about the battles he was involved in, the friends he lost and how he kept returning to the track despite being sent home twice with illness.

Iona social science head Justin Farley said the sacrifices made during war really hit the students when they learned Mr Allender’s platoon lost 23 of its 35 men.

“He was not much older than our students when he enlisted and we hope that his recollection will have a positive impact on the girls’ understanding of Australia’s military history,” he said.
