Poetry reading from the heart

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

When Beaconsfield’s Tineke Van der Eecken heard about an event in Belgium that invited writers to read their love poetry on the day of love, she decided to get together with other WA Poets Inc members to not only publish a collection of local love poems, but to host a romantic night of readings for local couples.

Hamilton Hill’s Amanda Joy, Hilton’s Jaya Penelope and Fremantle’s Veronica Lake will also be reading on the night, which the ABC’s Karen Tighe will host.

With the event now in its fifth year, Van der Eecken said rather than focusing on their own work this year, the poets would be reading a collection of classics.

“Each poet has chosen the poems that have inspired them,” she said.

“This show is different because it is not about just material things or just another fun night out, it goes deeper.

“Love poetry is a celebration of love in its truest form, as expressed throughout centuries and across continents by people who long for love.
