Police presence curtails crime in Fremantle’s entertainment area

POLICE have deemed a recent crackdown on crime in Fremantle’s entertainment precinct a success.

Between March and June, police took part in an entertainment precinct crackdown in Fremantle, Mandurah, Joondalup and Leederville on Friday and Saturday nights.

Police operated on a one-week-on, one- week-off presence in Fremantle, with the strategy proving successful in reducing crime due to an increased presence in the area.

A spokesman for WA Police said the strategy in Fremantle resulted in similar crime count reductions during patrol times and there could be significant cost savings for future crackdown operations if the week-on, week-off strategy worked in other areas.

Police also deemed the recent Operation Sweep a success, with a 2.3 per cent decrease in crime throughout Perth.

The operation looked to target unseasonal crime trends in the metropolitan area, following a 19.6 per cent increase in crime in July compared to July 2014.
