Staff WriterFremantle Gazette

SOUTH Fremantle may be the site of the largest urban solar farm in Australia.

The proposed site is on a former landfill site adjacent to the Fremantle Village Chalet Park on 17 Cockburn Road.

An application was submitted to the City of Fremantle last month, for public consultation and residents have until March 30 to comment on the proposal.

Set to be built and operated by Epuron, the farm is expected to be about 8ha in size and produce 4.9 megawatts of power.

Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the City had been investigating environmental options on this site since 1985.

“The lodging of the application is a significant milestone,” he said.

“The City has a target of being powered 100 per cent renewed energy by 2025.

“A solar farm is a perfect use for the land until longer term remediation and development is possible.”

A community information meeting will be held on March 1 at the Fremantle Town Hall.
