Public sculpture destroyed by fire

Ashes... The Hollow, erected on April 12, has been destroyed by what is thought to be a deliberately-lit fire.

Fire crews were called to Kings Square about 6am last Thursday morning with reports the seven-metre cardboard pyramid was on fire, just days after it was launched on April 12.

Feast Your Eyes lead designer Ariane Palassis said they were ‘bemused’ about what had happened.

‘We’re upset and more than anything we’re disappointed that this would happen because it’s something that we put together, not just for us, but for the community to use,’ she said.

‘It had such a great reaction from the community, children especially and the first reading session from the library was set to happen today Thursday.

‘But that’s the nature of public art, you need to have faith in people and it just takes one person to ruin it.

‘We just hope it doesn’t dissuade future programs with temporary public art, which is so important for our community.’

She said they believed the sculpture had been deliberately lit.
