The Success resident and her partner Neville are participating in the new Us Mob cooking program held at the South Lake Ottey Family and Neighbourhood Centre.
The classes teach people about the importance of healthy eating, recipe modification, how to read food labels, portion control and cooking on a budget.
Mrs Kirk said the program had become such an important part of her life that she even attended after losing her house roof in a storm.
‘I really didn’t want to miss out on the class that day as it was a lasagne class and I normally buy frozen lasagne,’ she said.
‘I was so glad we went as I learnt how easy and cheap it is to make homemade lasagne, and it even tasted better.’
South Metropolitan Public Health Unit health promotion officer Rachael Biddulph said members of the group were surprised that a healthy diet could be achieved on a budget.
