THE Relay for Life South Metro volunteer committee is gearing up for its 24-hour lap-a-thon event this month.

The family-friendly fun day at Success Regional Sporting Facility on October 7 will raise money for cancer research, prevention and support services.

The South Metro committee aims to increase community engagement this year, with market stalls and other activities that visitors do not have to register for.

Committee member Sarah Wiley said she relayed in the hope that her son would not have to hear the words ‘I have cancer’.

“When I first started at Cancer Council WA I didn’t have any personal connection to the cause, but as the years have gone on I have lost more and more people. Cancer Council WA is making a difference every minute, every hour and every day and this is something I am proud to be a part of,” she said.

Relay For Life celebrates those who have overcome cancer or are undergoing treatment, as well as the people who care for them.
