ALMOST 1000 runners took part in the annual Fremantle Half Marathon and 5km Fun Run this month.
One of many West Australian Marathon Club events, the Fremantle leg saw all entry fee proceeds donated to Diabetes WA, which also fielded a team.
Diabetes WA chief executive Andrew Wagstaff said diabetes was the world’s fastest growing chronic condition, but was rarely regarded as a serious problem.
“There are thousands of people in WA with pre-diabetes, which puts them at high risk of going on to develop type 2 diabetes,” he said.
“We know that for up to 60 per cent of these people, a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes can be prevented if they choose a healthier lifestyle, which includes staying physically active.
“This is why events like the Fremantle Half Marathon and Fun Run are so important because they inspire everyone to get active and get moving.”
Roberto Busi took out the half marathon in a little over an hour and 11 minutes.
