SAMSON grandfather Bill Massie is hoping to share the joy of Christmas with families doing it tough this festive season by gifting 30 pre-loved bikes on Saturday at Kadidjiny Park.
Mr Massie, otherwise known to community members as ‘Recycling Santa’, started the giveaway last year as part of Howard Sattler’s Howard’s Army but has branched out on his own.
He said he was inspired to help other families after his own grandchildren learned how to ride on recycled bikes.
“Last year it was done under Howard’s Army banner, that is Howard Sattler,” he said.
“I have given away many bikes at several location during the year.
“Our grandkids have all been taught (to ride) on recycled bikes.
“I feel as if all kids should learn to cycle which is why I started this giveaway.
“Recycling is the current buzzword and as it is the season to be merry, why not encourage recycling.”
The collection of preloved bikes have had adjustments made to them by Mr Massie and are ready to be used.
Children of pension card holders will get first chance to ride away on a bike.
A sausage sizzle will also be provided and kids can get a photo with Santa.
Mr Massie said children wanting a bike needed to bring an approved cycle helmet and a responsible adult to find a bike that was a fit for them.
“The bike give away is expected to be over within the first two hours so have to be quick,” he said.
He is taking donations of bike, scooters and any other toys in good condition on day to giveaway.
