BEACHGOERS are warned to be vigilant with a shark warning in place from Leighton Beach in North Fremantle to Sorrento Beach.

Two tagged great white sharks have been detected in waters around the Perth metropolitan area as many as seven times in the last week, with another sighting also reported off Swanbourne Beach today.

Authorities believe the frequency of the recent sightings could increase the likelihood of someone in the water encountering a shark.

Fisheries officers are monitoring the situation and are urging locals to obey any beach closures and to take extra precautions when entering the water.

Shark sightings can be reported to Water Police on 9442 8600.
