Six people have escaped a fire that started on a boat bound for Rottnest Island this morning.

The fire started about 9.30am this morning (December 26) on a 55 foot vessel traveling from Perth.

The occupants, five adults and a young child (believed to be a 5 year old) jumped overboard and were collected by a passing vessel.

They were then collected by a Fremantle Volunteer Marine Rescue boat.

No injuries were reported. Water Police attended and the fire spread quickly.

It is believed that the fire started in the engine room and the boat eventually sank.

The fire will be investigated by the Department of Transport – Marine Safety.
