Sleep Out Under the Stars to raise funds for St Pat’s

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

SLEEPING out under the stars is not just for camping.

St Patrick’s Community Support Centre has joined with the University of Notre Dame for the first annual Sleep Out Under the Stars fundraiser, inviting locals to spend a night in Fremantle to help raise money for St Pat’s programs addressing homelessness in Fremantle.

Held at the university campus, the family-friendly event will include musical entertainment and children’s activities.

St Pat’s chief executive Steve McDermott said the fundraiser was not only a way to raise much-needed funds for the organisation, but to also gave the Fremantle community a chance to help the most vulnerable.

“Either you can come for the music, soup and entertainment and then go home and sleep in your comfy bed or you can stay on with the rest of us and bunk down under the stars,” he said.

“This is our major fundraiser for the year so this really is critical for us.

“Demand for our services keeps rising in recent years but our funding has remained the same in real terms.

“So, if we’re going to be able to continue to get people back on their feet, living full lives of independence, we’re going to need to raise the additional money to cater for that growth in demand.”

Funds raised will go towards St Pat’s health clinic, the day centre, specialist outreach services and their Youth Place service.

The Sleep Out Under the Stars is on May 14 from 5.30pm at Notre Dame University’s Malloy Courtyard.
