Steve Smartt said there had been a spike in activity around local homes in the past six weeks and estimated he had caught 12 snakes in that time from South Lake, Spearwood, Bibra Lake and Yangebup.

Mr Smartt, who has been catching snakes and other reptiles for 19 years, contacted the Gazette after catching a three foot dugite in a Yangebup shed.

‘He was a frisky little fella,’ he said. ‘I had to pull everything out of the shed to find him.’

A few days later Mr Smartt caught a five-foot snake in a local factory.
