Spanish celebrity chef Miguel Maestre feeling right at home in Fremantle

THERE is not a lot about WA cheeky Spaniard and celebrity chef Miguel Maestre doesn’t like.

The co-host of the Network Ten’s The Living Room has been in Fremantle this week to show off the port city as part of the lifestyle television show.

Visiting Cicerello’s, Little Creatures Brewery, Bathers Beach and the Fishing Boat Harbour, the charismatic chef said he loved coming back to Perth and experiencing everything WA had to offer, especially its produce.

With a focus on seafood, Maestre said he caught up with local Anna Gare and he had been cooking with Fremantle octopus, Rottnest scallops and Shark Bay prawns – all of which were favourites.

“You can’t come to WA without having seafood so that was on the menu for us for this time,” he said.

“We did a seafood barbecue using all local ingredients with your Fremantle icon Anna Gare – she’s lovely, I’ve worked with her many times.

“Last time we were here I caught crabs – we went to Mandurah and caught some Blue Swimmer crabs – and it was a great experience.

“But this time we did a seafood chowder to feature on the show as part of five types of soups found around the country.”

The chowder, a recent addition to the Cicerello’s Fremantle menu, has become popular with locals and visitors.

As well as cooking up a storm on camera, Maestre said he would be doing cooking demonstrations at Stockland Riverton and Baldivis.

“I will be doing two demonstrations with a focus on family friendly meals,” he said.

“I will be cooking my delicious chicken tacos and my fruity icy poles for the kids.

“WA is pretty amazing and I just love to come back with every opportunity I get.”

Maestre said he was looking forward to hitting the couch as part of the new season of The Living Room on Friday February 9 with co-hosts Amanda Keller, Chris Brown, Barry Du Bois and a few guest hosts.

“I love working with my four beautiful friends – the chemistry is good and we all work really well together,” he said.

“This year it’s slightly different with Chris in the jungle and Barry not well but he is in very good spirits and looking good.

“So this year we will have a few guests including Jamie Durie, Grant Denyer, Kris Smith and The Bachelor’s Matty J joining us – it’s OK, Amanda controls us all.”

You can catch Maestre at Stockland Riverton Friday February 2 from 2pm and Stockland Baldivis on Saturday February 3 from 11am.

The Living Room starts on February 9 from 7.30pm on the Ten Network.
