Suburbs a crime hotspot

A report from RAC Insurance looked into the more than 2500 home burglary claims received in 2015, breaking them down by suburbs hardest hit.

Hamilton Hill tied with Canning Vale in fourth, while Spearwood came in at six.

Bassendean, Beechboro and Thornlie topped the list.

RAC Insurance home claims manager Glen Walker said homeowners needed to consider having a number of security measures to protect their homes.

“Fourteen per cent of our surveyed members already protect their homes with alarm and security systems,” he said.

“There are some things we do to give the impression someone is home, such as leaving lights, televisions or radios on for many hours that can actually have the opposite effect.

“Opportunistic thieves are on the look-out for easy targets.

“Keep garden sheds and workshops locked as power tools are at high risk of being stolen and tradesmen should be vigilant to secure tools carried in motor vehicles.”
