J Shed artists Jenny Dawson and Peter Zuvela teamed up with indigenous artists Jilalga Murray and Rozy Dann and a number of other artist in hand creating the porcelain and stoneware clay tiles mixed with sand from the Port Headland region.
An analemmatic sundial is a horizontal clock with a series of fixed hour points replacing hour lines.
The points are located in half circle patterns and a person standing on it will cast a shadow that will indicate the time.
Mr Zuvela said the finished product would have a diameter of 6.2 metres.
‘The installation in July will culminate in a community celebration of the artwork,’ he said.
‘It is hoped that in the future the sundial will continue to be used and admired by the local people and visitors to Hedland and celebrated as the culmination of a long process that involved so many people in the creation of a truly unique and distinctive piece of artwork.’
