Management at Cockburn Gateway Shopping Centre will extend centre Christmas trading hours

From December 5, Perth retailers can open at 7am from Monday to Saturday.

The extended trading hours include the choice of an 8am opening time on Sundays, plus consent to close at 6pm on weekends.

Commerce Minister Michael Mischin said the 53 extra trading hours in December and January would allow shops to cater for demand and compete more effectively with online shopping.

‘While this decision will ease the restrictions on retail trading at a very busy time of year, it is by no means compulsory for any business to open and close at these times,’ he said.

Perron Group’s general property manager Andrew Byars said the Cockburn Gateway was excited by the changes.

‘The centre will be open for all trading hours as announced by the minister, therefore giving all of our retailers the opportunity to open for all extended trade,’ he said.

‘It’s a positive for working families and busy people, giving them extra time during the festive season to shop.’

WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive Deidre Willmott said retailers would have more opportunities to meet the demands of their customers during a competitive period.

‘December is by far the biggest retail trading month during the year, so the option for additional hours to service this demand in the lead-up to Christmas and for the post sales will provide greater flexibility for retailers,’ she said.
