The City of Cockburn will seek public comment on two areas considered suitable for a new park – Jan Hammond Reserve in Success and Coogee’s Powell Reserve.

The results should allow the City to decide where to build the park, with $80,000 to be allocated in the 2016/17 budget to get it started.

In 2015, the City opened its first exercise area specifically for dogs at Yarra Vista Park in Jandakot.

City of Cockburn recreation and community safety manager Rob Avard said its popularity meant extra parks were now needed.

“The development of additional dog parks would be similar to what has been provided at the Yarra Vista Park location,” he said in a report to councillors.

That means a fenced-off, landscaped area with equipment where dog owners can meet, play and exercise their pets. Water fountains for people and pets will be included.

About 40 per cent of Cockburn households own one or more dogs.

There are 28 unfenced dog exercise areas in the City.
