A UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame lecturer will be able to further his bible studies in one of Christianity’s most sacred places after receiving a scholarship.
The B.J Hickey Biblical Foundation scholarship will allow Notre Dame’s School of Philosophy and Theology lecturer Lawrence Pang to travel to the Tantur Ecumenical Institute in Jerusalem to further his Old Testament studies.
Dr Pang said the month-long study would deepen his understanding of Israel and its history, culture, people and faith.
“Students in my classes at Notre Dame will be the beneficiaries of my trip to Israel, not just in terms of scriptural knowledge, but getting them more closely engaged with Old and New Testament scriptures,” he said.
He said stories from the Old Testament were just as relevant today as they were centuries ago.
“Underpinned by jealousy, Cain murdered his brother after God favoured Abel’s sacrifice over his own,” he said.
“The prevailing focus in our society is on the ‘I’ rather than ‘us’ and consumerism feeds the mentality of having more rather than being more.
“Nothing is more important than loving and caring relationships.”
