Vollies bring on smiles with kindness

Eighty-six volunteers chipped in to hand out 200 gift vouchers, cook more than 400 sausage sizzles, wash 20 vehicles free of charge and collect bags of litter, among other charitable acts.

Project Hope volunteers required nothing in return, except for the recipient to pass on a kind act.

‘It feels unconditional, it feels genuine and it feels really exciting and satisfying to make someone smile,’ said coordinator Jacqueline Ewe.

‘We surprised lots of people who didn’t know how to react at first because it’s not a normal occurrence to have a stranger give you something for nothing.

‘Once we explained what we were doing they were happy to receive and were grateful for the gesture.’
