Walk aims to open eyes to habitat threat

Staff ReporterFremantle Gazette

The event was organised by Save Beeliar Wetlands (SBW) and was attended by Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett and a number of local political figures, including Fremantle MLA Simone McGurk and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren.

SBW member Danna Checksfield said the group was keen to give people a first-hand look at the habitat that could potentially be destroyed should the Roe Highway extension through local wetlands go ahead.

‘Many people commented that they didn’t realise there was such pristine and diverse bushland hiding in the suburbs,’ she said.

‘We wanted to show that the campaign is still ongoing and that even though the Federal Government is touting it as a done deal, the EPA still haven’t come back with their decision.’
