Weight of expectation in Olympic year

Jessica NicoFremantle Gazette

Russian strongman Vlad Rigert and world champion Dmitry Lapikov, both of whom can lift more than 200kg, will team up to compete against 12 of WA’s best, including Fremantle’s Georgia Cervin.

“This event is such a coup that it will create history in Perth,” event organiser Bob Pavone said.

“As it’s an Olympic year, everyone normally likes to watch the weightlifting at the Olympics. Well, I’m showing people what it would feel like if they were there.

“This is history-making because what these two top Russian weightlifting legends will lift in Perth, no one will have ever seen before and this is the only time to see them outside of the Olympic Games.”
