White Gum Valley: Hazel Orme Community Kindergarten kids muck into new kitchen

Leah RobertsFremantle Gazette

CHILDREN at the Hazel Orme Community Kindergarten in White Gum Valley will be cooking up a storm in their new kitchen.

Head teacher Megan Boyle said the school had been looking to renovate the kitchen when a parent gave a donation allowing it to do so.

“One of the parents came to our annual general meeting where discussion surrounding the renovating the kitchen came up,” she said.

“The parents Greg and Susie Brown kindly donated the $15,000 kitchen for no cost.

“They hired the labourers for the installation and we had parents helpers which was great.”

Mrs Boyle said the teachers and students used it everyday.

“We use it to cut fruit everyday for the kids and we plan to use it for some baking,” she said.

“Baking is a great way to introduce numeracy skills to the kids.

“We have visual charts and the kids can count the number of cups of flour for instance.

“The kitchen itself is great, the bench is at the kids heights and the cooking utensils for kids are easy to reach.”

The kitchen has been a huge success for the kids too, who enjoyed making biscuits in all shapes.
