Hilton was named the Waste Wise School winner for starting waste reduction programs like banning juice boxes at sports day, making beeswax lunch wraps and offering welcome packs to new families to teach them about the issue.

Hilton Primary School principal Julie Harrison said students had learnt about Plastic Free July, made a worm farm, took part in regular litter collection and recycled batteries, toothbrushes and mobile phones.

“The beauty of having such a small school is that as well as providing excellent pastoral care where everyone knows everyone else, all students can be involved in one way or another in these special projects,” she said.
